Blood sugar levels should really be at about 4.5 to 8 mmol not 7 to 10. I would be worried if I had between 8-10
ReplyDeleteGood segment
But, Whoopi. Working class people don't have the finances to pay for "veggie drinks" at 10 USD a day for 1 person. That would be 1200 USD for 1 familly. Vegetables are so much better, healthier and much more affordable. The pros of veggies is also that you stuff your plate with more vegetables instead of too much meat and carbohydrates.
Whoa, there, Sweden! It's not that bad over here yet!! A can of V-8 does NOT cost $10! Heck, you can even get a big one for less than half of that!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Whoopi was just trying to put an alternative out there, mainly, these days you can drink a lot of your veggies. I wish someone had also spoken up about the fact that FROZEN veggies are almost nutritionally identical to fresh, if minimally processed and salted. There are LOTS of ways to improve your diet, and ---> I'm sorry, Dr. Releford, but I don't buy the "access" argument. Not in 2009, not in America. Please tell it like it is: you're dealing with cultural and social issues that determine what people eat. People don't be choosing to eat bacon AND sausage with their pancake breakfasts because they can't get their hands on an orange, please........
Long story short: cut down on fats and sugars, don't eat fried foods, get veggies in your diet any way you can.. And for God's sake, don't smoke.
Honestly, I totally agree with some of the things that you are saying. It is a combination of both ignorance and lack of access. If you have ever been to the hood, you will see more fried chicken places and liquor stores than you will ever see a supermarket that sells fresh produce. It's easier to eat unhealthy than it is to travel 30 minutes to buy a salad.
ReplyDeleteNow, this doesn't ignore that everyone makes a their own choices in life. You can choose to take 30 minutes to go to that supermarket in the more affluent neighborhood. OR you can choose to go to McDonald's and SUPERSIZE IT. I think black people, speaking for myself as well, need to cut back on the chitterlings, ham, bacon, and steak and we need to exercise and eat a nutritional meal. That's what it all boils down to. It's a vicious cycle and some one has to break the chain.
